My teaching experience over the years has allowed me to see the dynamics of different students across all grades.
I would sit up till late at night finding new and FUN innovate ways to teach my learners in class. They were very vocal about the content being ‘boring or simply difficult’. I had to find different games for the different grades and subjects that I taught.
Mathematics was one of them, and learning algebraic fractions and equations was every child’s nightmare. If the time allocation within a period was not limited, the vast syllabus content made it challenging. However, I found that when learners were engaged in something exciting, they were able to complete activities quicker and obtained higher results.
I was amazed that students of both lower and higher grades were receptive to FUN learning, as they felt that school became too stressful.
Grade 3 and 4 learners were bombarded with tests and assignments, yet alone the dynamics of grade 10 to matric learners.
It goes without saying that the Covid Pandemic put major stress on education at large. Most students who struggle in academics look forward to the sports and other FUN activities that the curriculum offered. We were all faced with the sudden restriction on all fronts. Group work, cultural events and sporting activities were impacted the most.
This had a ripple effect on learning styles and moved away from the FUN element. Educators and students are still unable to catch up on syllabus.
We take it for granted that the older the learner, the less FUN they require. However, we need to constantly ensure that despite the age of a learner, learning needs to remain lively.
